Energy & water

Zonnepanelen_klein

Generating power using fossil fuels, such as oil and gas, causes climate change. This causes sea levels to rise and increases the amount of meltwater and rainwater. As a result, we need to reinforce our dykes. We can also reduce flooding by using less fossil fuels and generating more sustainable power, for example, from sun, wind and water.

Sustainable power

We have great opportunities for generating sustainable power on the Afsluitdijk. It’s often very windy and the light intensity is greater in the north compared to the rest of the Netherlands. We can also generate power by using water currents, the difference in water levels between low and high tide and the difference between fresh and salt water. Both the authorities and knowledge institutes and companies are very interested in the Energy & Water theme. These parties often collaborate within Energy Valley.

Energy dykes

The Netherlands has an important international status in the field of exporting technology and knowledge regarding water safety and water management. The issue concerning new and sustainable forms of energy is a global one. Knowledge about innovative and sustainable dykes and water-retaining structures reinforces this strong Dutch market position. By developing demonstration projects on the Afsluitdijk, we are expanding our knowledge and experience in this field. In a national project named Energising Deltas, De Nieuwe Afsluitdijk is collaborating with other parties to strengthen this position even more.
