What is it?
We will be reinforcing our national icon of hydraulic-engineering works, the Afsluitdijk, and want to make the dam more attractive to tourists. A number of ‘hubs’ are located along the Afsluitdijk: Zurich, Kornwerderzand, Breezanddijk, the Monument and Den Oever. We will be upgrading these places and connecting them in an appealing way. As a walker, cyclist or car driver, you will then be able to experience the Afsluitdijk safely, easily and at its most beautiful.
Recreational connection: a cycle track on the Wadden Sea side
Now you can cycle alongside the motorway. However, our plan is to construct a new cycle track and footpath. This track will run along the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage Site, allowing you to enjoy this beautiful area. The track will be constructed between the Frisian coast and the locks and casemates at Kornwerderzand. And between the Monument and Den Oever. Here the track will connect to the developments of the Den Oever, the Wadden Sea Gateway project. You can visit attractive facilities, such as a beach, viewpoints and camper van sites.
De Nieuwe Afsluitdijk is also working on plans to allow car drivers to enjoy the panoramic views of the area. We are doing this by improving the existing hubs of Kornwerderzand, the Monument and the service areas in between. In this way we want to make sure that, as a car driver, you can enjoy the beautiful unobstructed views of the IJsselmeer and the Wadden Sea more than you currently can.
