Afsluitdijk Wadden Center

The Afsluitdijk Wadden Center is the place where tourists can experience the stories of the UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea, the unique Fish Migration River, the IJsselmeer area and the developments on and around the Afsluitdijk. This visitor center should draw more visitors to the Afsluitdijk and its surroundings, thus giving an impetus to the regional economy.

What is it?

The Afsluitdijk Wadden Center project on Kornwerderzand is completed since March 2018. In this center, the story is told about the UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea, the Fish Migration River, the renewed, future-proof Afsluitdijk and the IJsselmeer. The Afsluitdijk Wadden Center is more than a traditional information center. The center features an interactive exposition on the components which make the Afsluitdijk unique. There is also a restaurant with a lovely view on the IJsselmeer.

Starting point for a more extensive visit

The Afsluitdijk Wadden Center is the gateway to a visit to the provinces North Holland and Fryslân. The center is also the starting point for a more extensive visit to Kornwerderzand, like the Kazemattenmuseum (Casemate museum), the possibly expanded lift-lock, the drainage sluices, which will be renovated, and the Fish Migration River, which is yet to be realized.

Facilitating developments

De Nieuwe Afsluitdijk wishes to facilitate initiatives – both public and private – which are related to the story of the Afsluitdijk. These include stories about the origins of the dyke, the renovation of the dyke, the Fish Migration River, fresh and salt water, the UNESCO Wadden Sea and the IJsselmeer. With the Afsluitdijk Wadden Center, a first important step has been taken to achieve this.
