The Afsluitdijk, new stories

In 1932, our country made history. By constructing the Afsluitdijk, we conquered the water and we changed salt water into fresh water. A true victory for our safety, agriculture and drinking water supplies. Moreover, our Zuiderzeewerken, including the Afsluitdijk, made us world famous.

Currently, the Afsluitdijk is in need of a renovation. Under the name “De Nieuwe Afsluitdijk” (The New Afsluitdijk), local authorities are working together with Rijkswaterstaat to create a safe, sustainable, attractive and future-proof dike. An information centre has been erected at Kornwerderzand to keep you updated about the plans. At this information centre, we will tell you about the future and the past of the Afsluitdijk.
