The Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment has asked The Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management (Rijkswaterstaat) to make the Afsluitdijk compliant with current standards. This is required because the dam no longer meets the safety standards.
The standards are quite strict in the Netherlands: the dam must be able to withstand a storm, which has a chance of occurring once every ten thousand years. That is a very severe hurricane.
Rijkswaterstaat will ensure that the dam is reinforced and will provide more possibilities to drain more water from the IJsselmeer to the Wadden Sea. The plans of Rijkswaterstaat are stated in the Afsluitdijk Plan Specification Starting Document.
